Language and communication are highly complex skills that begin to develop before birth, and which most of us take for granted. Approximately 10% of all children have persistent speech, language and/or communication difficulties. Of these, 3% of children have speech, language and/or communication difficulties as part of another diagnosis (e.g. developmental delay, autism, cerebral palsy). Early intervention is therefore important as such difficulties can impact on a child’s literacy skills, ability to form friendships, access the school curriculum, their behaviour and mental wellbeing.
